For party planners, a Memorial Day Party falls just short of the all-out red, white and blue festivities of the Fourth of July. But it’s still the kickoff to the summer and a wonderful day to honor those who have fought for our country.

Luckily, throwing a Memorial Day party doesn’t have to be a hassle. And friends and family will love the opportunity to get the summer off to a good start.

Here are some ideas to get a Memorial Day party just right.

Memorial Day Party Tips

Consider some of the following elements to set the right mood.

Striped tablecloth. Get a red and white-striped cloth to cover the outdoor picnic table (or the inside table you have to drag outside).

Red, white and blue silverware. A batch of plastic silverware is in patriotic colors is easy to find

Small flags. Small flags that be used for decorations, and waved around by the kids, is a terrific way to acknowledge the reason for the holiday without going to “full Fourth of July” mode.

Red cups. Red, plastic cups are the classic for any outdoor get-together. Here, they match the decor perfectly.

Food

Now is the time to invest in a grill if you don’t have one. Or, get a neighbor to loan you one.

Grilling is essential for Memorial Day. Hamburgers are the classic, of course, although ribs won’t be frowned upon by the carnivores on your guest list. For vegans, considering roasting vegetables on the grill, which gives them a wonderful taste, as well.

And if you want to carry the patriotic spirit into dessert, consider red, white and blue cupcakes, available at most bakeries this time of year.

For side items, consider machines that make it easy to serve hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones.

Fun
